It was the summer of 1940 when the Hacker Boat Company delivered Tahoe’s venerable Thunderbird Yacht to Mayfield’s Boatyard, now the Tahoe City Marina. Commissioned by George Whittell and to be housed at his private east shore lakefront estate, the Thunderbird was designed by famed naval architect John L. Hacker.
