Benjamin F. Downing, the head carpenter for Richard Morris Hunt, built this home for himself at the turn of the century. His craftsmanship is particularly evident by the handsome staircase that defines the entrance foyer and beyond. Frederick Law Olmsted already in the 1870’s took multiple photographs of School Street as example of how a streetscape should look.
